Digital Hamilton – a digital vision for Hamilton city

Digital Hamilton is a flagship project from the thriving business environment strategy theme. It identifies actions to improve use of digital technology by organisations and individuals in Hamilton.

Opportunity Hamilton is managing the implementation of the strategy, which has four key areas:

Cohesion

  • Establish Hamilton ICT industry cluster and digital community forums to accelerate digital sector innovation and growth

Awareness

  • Promote potential commercialisation opportunities
  • Increase the use of technology by non-technology sectors
  • Promote and facilitate support of technology in learning

Innovation

  • Increase technology innovation with a view to local, national and international commercialisation
  • Identify unrealised benefits and/or opportunities in ag-bio research and leverage Waikato’s large number of scientists
  • Improve digital business incubation, ensuring best practise incubation in Hamilton

Infrastructure

  • Project manager Digital Hamilton to optimise outcomes from UFB deployment through assessment and where necessary recommend changes to policy and/or district plan
  • Actively assess initiatives in other regions and apply to Hamilton

Digital Industry Forum

The Digital Industry Forum is an industry cluster group that aims to grow, support and promote the collective capabilities of Waikato’s digital community to the world.

  The borough of Hamilton was established on 27 October 1877 and Hamilton became a city on 13 December 1945.  Hamilton’s Maori name is Kirikiriroa meaning long stretch of gravel.  New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato, flows for 16km through the city.  Mild climate and moderate year round rainfall keep the city and surrounding area very green.  Mean temperatures - 18C in January (summer) and 9C in July (winter).  Hamilton has135 parks and gardens and 58 sports areas and over 1,000 hectares of open space.  Hamilton has 3 public swimming pools and over 55 kms of walkways in parks and reserves. Hamilton is student city, with more than 46,000 people in tertiary study Hamilton Zoo is home to over 600 native New Zealand and exotic animals, set in 25 ha of tranquil surroundings  Hamilton is the business, service, and educational centre of the Waikato region.  Waikato Hospital is a 600 bed regional base hospital located in Hamilton and is the largest tertiary training hospital in the Southern Hemisphere.
